In the fifth Student Deep Science Hackathon, an AI and augmented reality-based idea wins

From 20 to 22 October, the fifth Student Deep Science Hackathon, jointly organized by the ISSP UL and partners, took place at the House of Nature of the University of Latvia, where the best idea title and the main prize of EUR 2000 went to the AI and augmented reality idea "SafeSight".

The idea "SafeSight", developed by this year’s Student Deep Science Hackathon winning team - Kristers Katkevičis-Čirkovs, Jēkabs Čudars, Markuss Namajs, Marta Paula Šadinova, and Eduards Žeirs - is an augmented reality glasses and technology that would allow AI to identify potentially dangerous objects on construction sites and provide the user with instructions for safe work when operating with various tools and equipment.

The second place of the hackathon and a cash prize of EUR 500 was awarded to the student and pupil team "LATSAT". The teams "PowerPulse" and "EmpowerAI" received special motivation prizes. This year, 14 teams competed for the title of the best idea in the Student Deep Science Hackathon.

Every year, the hackathon brings together talented secondary school and university students from various fields. By joining forces in an interdisciplinary team, participants develop interesting ideas in science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics ideas with innovation potential. A lot gets accomplished in 48 hours!  During the hackathon, participants are provided with professional mentoring support, a co-working environment and information on commercialization steps.

The Student Deep Science Hackathon was organized by the Institute of Solid State Physics, University of Latvia, ISSP UL Foundation, and Students’ Council of the University of Latvia (online community “The Racoons”). The event was supported by project No 1.1.1.3/18/A/007, "University of Latvia Innovation Grants for Students" activities.
