ISSP UL team recognized as finalist in Global Prize Innovation in Desalination 2024

The ISSP UL team has been selected as one of the 32 finalists for the Global Prize Innovation in Desalination (GPID) 2024, held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

From November 24 to 28, Ģirts Ozoliņš from the Development Department and Aleksejs Zolotarjovs, Head of the Optical Materials Laboratory, visited Jeddah as part of the 32 invited finalists for the GPID. This award is part of the third edition of the Innovation-Driven Water Sustainability Conference (IDWS). This international event unites the global desalination industry and academia to showcase innovations and technologies.

The technology submitted for the GPID is Spectromarine—an optical water quality monitoring sensor developed at the ISSP UL during a national research commercialization support grant program organized by the Investment and Development Agency of Latvia. The GPID 2024 received over 500 applications from both industry and academia, making the selection as one of the 32 finalists a significant achievement for the ISSP UL team and an important recognition of Spectromarine technology within the desalination industry.

During the event, the ISSP UL team presented their poster and held discussions with an existing pilot project partner, one of the largest water desalination corporations in the region, to review the current status and outline the next steps for collaboration.

There was considerable interest in the Spectromarine sensor technology, not only from representatives of the desalination industry but also from potential end-users and partners in the fields of wastewater treatment and environmental monitoring. This visit has opened new doors and established valuable contacts for ISSP UL in the Gulf region.
