Exploring physics: Smiltene secondary school students visit ISSP UL

On April 30, Smiltene secondary school students visited ISSP UL. The visit aimed to familiarize the students with the institute’s diverse fields of activity and its notable scientific achievements.

Before the lab tour, students were provided with an overview of the institute’s work, its scientific achievements, and future endeavors. Following the presentation, the students toured several laboratories. Their first stop was the Laboratory of Spectroscopy, one of the largest laboratories of the ISSP UL, where they learned about research methods involving optical, magnetic, and electron spectroscopy. The other Laboratory students visited was the Laboratory of Thin Films, where they gained insights into thin film science and deposition technologies using various methods.

The visit offered students valuable insights into the practical side of physics and scientific research. Engaging presentations and a tour of the laboratory deepened their appreciation for the institute’s work and highlighted various career paths in physics.

Students who wish to become more involved with ISSP UL were encouraged to consider taking part in next year’s Solar Cup competition and Job Shadow Day 2025, which will allow them to observe physicists in their professional settings.
