Fostering scientific curiosity: a visit from Riga Ēbelmuiža Elementary School to ISSP UL

On March 26, the ISSP UL hosted the second school youth visit to the ISSP UL, which gives hope that the students’ interest in science has started to grow. This time, the youth was from the special school – Riga Ēbelmuiža Elementary School, a specialized boarding school for deaf and hard-of-hearing children. The school’s history dates back to 1839, making it the oldest school of its kind in the Baltics. It is the only specialized school in Latvia that provides education for deaf children.

At the ISSP UL, the school group was met by representatives from the Development Department, who, at the beginning of the visit, introduced the participants to the institute’s successes, research projects, and everyday activities. The school youth also explored several laboratories, including those focused on Micro and Nanodevices, Optical Materials, Spectroscopy, and Energy Materials.

The guests had an opportunity to glimpse into the lives of scientists, their experiments, and sophisticated equipment. This excursion was designed to illustrate the practical uses of physics and encourage students to consider careers in science.

This visit allowed the children to gain valuable perspectives on the practical elements of physics and research. Through interactive presentations and lab explorations, they enhanced their understanding of the institute’s endeavors and the opportunities in the physics field. Upcoming events and initiatives will further enrich their learning journey.

Students interested in continuing their engagement with ISSP UL were encouraged to participate in future events like the Latvian Physics Festival or Solar Cup competition. They were also invited to visit the ISSP UL on the last Friday of September when the most engaging event of the year for all audiences will take place – the European Researcher’s Night.
