ISSP UL researchers discuss cooperation at National Sun Yat-Sen University

In December, the director of the ISSP UL, Dr.phys. Andris Anspoks and researchers from the Laboratory of Organic Materials, Laboratory of Micro and Nanodevices, and Laboratory of Microscopy, PhD. Arturs Bundulis, Dr.sc.ing. Gatis Mozolevskis, and Dr.phys. Krišjānis Šmits visited the National Sun Yat-Sen University (NSYSU) in Taiwan. The visit aimed to discuss the possibilities of scientific cooperation between Taiwan and Latvia and the future development of international cooperation.

During the visit, a seminar was organized where researchers from the ISSP UL and NSYSU presented their main research directions and shared their latest scientific achievements. Each ISSP UL researcher had individual meetings with NSYSU researchers.

The visit allowed the identification of cooperation opportunities in several directions.

With the Institute of Medical Sciences and Technologies, negotiations were started on cooperation in electrochemical biosensors and with the Institute of Precision Medicine - on cooperation in the field of organs-on-a-chip.

Talks on cooperation in nonlinear optics and photonics were started. Together with the Department of Chemistry and the Department of Materials and Optoelectronic Sciences, new non-linear optical materials research directions were already put forward. Further cooperation in the field of SERS sensors and additional research on optical materials in the ISSP UL’s Laboratory of Microscopy was discussed.

In parallel, negotiations were started with the Department of Photonics on cooperation in the research of polymer photonics and hybrid photonic platforms. The expertise of the Taiwanese scientists in device characterization is valuable in ISSP UL’s efforts to develop a polymer photonics platform.

A discussion was started on the possibility of cooperation in developing electron microscopy methods and student exchange opportunities in the field of electron microscopy for those interested in conducting research in the field of materials.

Most of the work currently carried out by the ISSP UL is focused on the production of polymer photonics devices. Considering the NSYSU’s knowledge in inorganic photonics device characterization, cooperation in this field has also been initiated.

In addition to already existing cooperation, the ISSP UL delegation also visited several materials research and physics laboratories, and new directions of cooperation were identified.
