On August 19, ISSP UL’s researcher and the head of customer solutions for the Materize platform, Ainārs Knoks, participated in a meeting of the Federation of Security and Defense Industries of Latvia (FSDI) and the Minister of Defense Andris Sprūds to discuss new guidelines developed by the Ministry of Defense. These guidelines focus on enhancing the involvement of the defense and security industry in national defense procurement.
In July 2023, the Cabinet of Ministers of Latvia approved the National Armed Forces Development Plan for 2025-2036, which outlines a long-term and medium-term vision for military development in response to current threats and potential future challenges.
This comprehensive plan includes an ambitious range of procurements scheduled to be expedited, emphasizing collaboration with local industry. For the first time, it provides specific guidelines for industry participation in major investment areas over the next four years, focusing on developing and maintaining military capabilities and infrastructure.
The guidelines identify five key acquisition areas for the upcoming four years: transport systems, anti-tank weapon systems, layered air defense, infantry fighting vehicles, and wheeled artillery systems. These projects present valuable opportunities for industry engagement, particularly in meeting the security of supply requirements.
Additionally, the industry is encouraged to participate in the procurement of security measures, combat capabilities, and the development and maintenance of military vehicles and materials. Support for innovation and technology development tailored to the defense sector’s needs is also included in these initiatives.
