ISSP UL’s early stage researcher takes part in the 25th Congress of the International Union of Crystallography

In order to contribute to Camart2 mission, which is to serve as a knowledge base helping to educate the new generation of researchers, an early stage researcher and representative from ISSP UL’s Laboratory of Materials Morphology and Structure Investigations participated in the Congress of the International Union of Crystallography.

25th Congress of the International Union of Crystallography took place in Prague, Czech Republic on August 14-22, 2021. After the year of restrictions and almost only online events, scientists were able to attend an in-person event. This year’s congress was the 25th anniversary congress, which completed a whole era that started in 1948. The main aim of the event was to expand knowledge about crystallography, methods and to network with people from the most developed scientific institutions in the world.

Congress included presentations about research into the structures and microstructures of minerals, new functional materials, nanoparticles, and thin films. The relationship between material structures and their functions were discussed. Within the framework of the workshops and the congress, the development of instrumental methods for structural characterization of materials, improvement of laboratory equipment, development of optics, production of better and faster detectors was discussed.

The triennial congresses of the IUCr are the major international scientific meetings for crystallographers world wide. Each congress includes one or more sessions of the General Assembly which approves the policies of the Union. The congress programme was prepared by the International Programme Committee representing mainly the IUCr commissions that are also the main focus of the congress: Aperiodic Crystals, Biological Macromolecules, Quantum Crystallography, Crystal Growth and Characterization of Materials, Crystallographic Computing, Crystallographic Nomenclature, Crystallographic Teaching, Crystallography in Art and Cultural Heritage, Crystallography of Materials, Electron Crystallography, High Pressure, Inorganic and Mineral Structures, Magnetic Structures, Mathematical and Theoretical Crystallography, Neutron Scattering, NMR Crystallography and Related Methods, Powder Diffraction, Small-Angle Scattering, Structural Chemistry, Synchrotron and XFEL Radiation, XAFS.
